Gold and Brushed Nickel Cabinet Hardware: Finish Guide and Pairings

Outside the brass family, three finishes carry the majority of US kitchen and bath specifications: brushed gold, polished gold, and brushed nickel. Each reads differently against the same cabinet color, ages differently in the same room, and serves a distinct visual intention. This is the ARCHANDLES guide hub for gold and brushed nickel cabinet hardware — direct finish comparisons, finish-room fit articles, and the cabinet color pairings that strengthen each one.

The three finishes share a cooler-than-brass temperature reading but split sharply on intent: brushed gold is warm and contemporary, polished gold is statement-level reflective, and brushed nickel is the clean architectural neutral. Knowing which to specify is half the work; the articles below cover the other half.

The Three Finishes — Fast Read

  • Brushed Gold (PVD) — Warm but not yellow. The contemporary alternative to brushed brass for modern kitchens. Pairs well with sage green, navy blue, and warm whites.
  • Polished Gold — Statement finish, high reflection. Best on small zones: a single bath vanity, a kitchen island, or a feature wall of cabinets. Not the right choice as a full-kitchen specification — too much reflection at scale.
  • Brushed Nickel (PVD or Electroplated) — The architectural neutral. Reads cool but warm enough to pair with brass on appliances. Modern kitchens, contemporary baths, and homes where the cabinetry should not be the focal point.

Finish Engineering and Care

Brushed Gold (PVD) uses a vapor-deposited surface that resists fingerprints and abrasion better than traditional gold plating. Clean with a soft cloth, mild soap. No solvents.

Polished Gold finishes are reflective — they will show every fingerprint and water spot. Specify only where the room can be wiped regularly without inconvenience. Soft cloth only, dry after moisture contact.

Brushed Nickel in PVD form is the most maintenance-forgiving of the three. Electroplated brushed nickel is also reliable for residential use. Damp cloth, mild soap. No abrasives.
